WAIT! What IS the Self-Determination Program through Regional Center
The Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a service model offered through Regional Centers in California designed to give individuals with developmental disabilities and their families more control and flexibility over the services and supports they receive. This program allows participants to have greater choice in selecting, hiring, and managing the services and supports that best meet their individual needs and preferences.
Key Features of the Self-Determination Program:
-
Person-Centered Planning: The SDP is built around the concept of person-centered planning, which means that services and supports are tailored to the unique needs, preferences, and goals of the individual.
-
Individual Budget: Participants receive an individual budget based on the services and supports they have used in the past. This budget can be used to purchase services and supports that help them achieve their goals.
-
Flexibility: The program offers flexibility in choosing service providers and in designing how services are delivered. Participants can hire traditional service providers or individuals from the community.
-
Control: Participants have the authority to make decisions about how their budget is spent, giving them more control over their lives and the services they receive.
-
Support in Decision-Making: While participants have more control, they are also supported in making informed decisions about their services and supports.
